    The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Revenue, Division of Local Services is hiring a Tax Counsel.

    The attorney who fills this position serves as a legal resource for personnel within the Department and other state agencies on the legal and policy issues that arise in the course of the local tax and finance oversight responsibilities of the Division.

    • The attorney drafts advisory notices, opinions, guidelines and other publications that interpret municipal tax and finance laws and explain agency positions, policies and practices to local officials; drafts and reviews legislation; conducts training programs and presentations for local officials; responds to formal and informal inquiries from state and local officials about municipal tax and finance law; and performs other dues as assigned.

    The City of Cambridge is hiring an Assistant City Solicitor.  

    Under the supervision and direction of the City Solicitor, Deputy City Solicitor, and First Assistant City Solicitor, the Assistant City Solicitor’s duties include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Prosecute and defend suits in which the City is a party in state and federal courts and administrative agencies.
    • Handle transactional matters in which the City is involved.
    • Provide representation and advice to the City Manager, City Council, department heads and other City officials on a broad variety of legal issues, rights, obligations and practices under applicable federal, state and local laws, and exercise sound judgment in making decisions and rendering advice regarding the City’s legal affairs.
    • Draft advisory opinions to the City Manager, City Council, School Committee, department heads, and boards/commissions/committees.
    • Draft and review legislation and a wide range of legal instruments.
    • Perform work as required and at the direction of the City Solicitor, and other tasks as assigned. 

    Rate: $131,910.121 - $153,036.491 Annually.

    ASSISTANT CITY SOLICITOR I - GENERALIST

    CITY OF WORCESTER

    The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for an Assistant City Solicitor I - Generalist to join the fast-paced, high-volume, collaborative and congenial Law Department. Under the direction of the City Solicitor, the Assistant City Solicitor 1 - Generalist will provide competent and timely legal services, advice, and recommendations to City Departments, and the City's officers, employees, boards, and commissions. This position will be responsible for performing risk analysis and evaluation of pre-litigation claims, drafting legal documents such as ordinances, conveyance documents, and reviewing and drafting of contracts, leases and licenses. The Assistant City Solicitor I will also represent the City's best interests in resolving such claims before litigation or in civil litigation matters and general Government Services, including assignments such as rendering legal opinions to City officers, departments, boards, and commissions. The assignments will be based on overall related legal experience and demonstrated proficiency in a local government setting. While expertise may be gained in a specialized area of municipal law, the incumbent assumes responsibility for legal matters in any area as assigned by the City Solicitor or their designee.

    The Town of Barnstable is seeking to hire an Assistant Town Attorney who will be responsible for litigation, zoning and land use and other regulatory matters, and who will assist the Town Attorney in advising Town employees and board and committee members on legal issues affecting the Town. The Assistant Town Attorney will represent the Town in legal proceedings and quasi-judicial or administrative proceedings before courts and regulatory agencies. The successful candidate will: have a Juris Doctor degree, be admitted to practice in Massachusetts and be admitted or eligible to practice in federal court; and have at least 7 years of litigation experience, including at least 5 years of municipal experience or equivalent. Zoning and land use and real estate experience preferred. Experience with affordable housing and trusts a plus. Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, possess excellent judgment and have strong research and writing skills. Must be able to prioritize and multi-task. Position has the ability to work remotely up to 4 days per week. May be required to attend Town Council and other night meetings.
